#115: Weekly Audition & Coaching Recap

Friday 12/6/24

Welcome to Friday! We will be reviewing auditions, coachings, shows I saw and we are REPLACING SHOW OF THE MONTH with my process on role prep. I’ll explain more below :)

AUDITIONS

Well, I spoke too soon the other day. I was supposed to have an audition for a role for a tour, they were still seeking a Sally Slaton. And then, 2 days later announced the cast so that got canceled lol. They had mentioned they were ongoing with casting and were reviewing tapes as well so it wasn’t SHOCKING but I saw the post BEFORE I heard it was canceled haha. AND THAT’S SHOWBIZ KIDS.

COACHINGS

I had a pretty big coaching week - mostly prepping my college audition students for the next round of auditions. We are approaching the LIVE/IN PERSON audition round and things change a bit. It’s funny because some students really trust the process and others get more and more unsettled as we go. They see prescreen results and if there are 3-4 that they didn’t pass, but let’s say they passed 3-4 (which is normal!)... they think they have to change something. Like, did you think you needed to change a song or a monologue when you PASSED auditions? Come on. I usually have them select a backup MT song, a pop song, and a 2nd contemporary monologue JUST IN CASE someone asks for any of those. Still a lot to do!

SHOWS I SAW

I’ll be recapping GYPSY on its own on Monday. I have too much to say.

ROLE PREP

I thought it might be fun to talk through some of the work in do when doing a role prep. Role prep could be for a show im IN, but i also do it a few times a year in anticipation of someday playing a role. I’ve recently gotten all the materials for DEAR EVAN HANSEN so i’ll be doing some independent work on HEIDI HANSEN because I very much see that role in my future. I’ll be learning the role as if i’m playing it down to harmonies in group numbers. So, stay tuned but it’s going to be fun! Join me if you want - pick a role and I’ll walk you through everything i’m doing. This week will be all about reading the libretto & learning all SOLO songs and SOLO sections of music.
