#80: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap
Friday 10/18/24
Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update.
COACHINGS
All weekend was spent filming prescreens - including Monday - so I really only had 10 coachings this week plus the workshop I spoke about yesterday! One thing I wanted to point out was that I spoke to several people this week about understanding the goal of the audition. The goal of the audition is to SHOW YOURSELF IN THE WORLD OF THE SHOW/CHARACTER. This is SO CRITICAL because your job isn’t to get the job! Your job is to demonstrate how your ability fits in with the show or season in question. What does this mean? You don’t have to sing every single note you can, or showcase every single acting skill. You just have to do something that gives them a bit of who you are and what you do! That note you only can hit half of the time? It’s a no for me.
AUDITIONS
I fear I’m going to disappoint here for a while. Wow, you know, last month I was on a roll. I had several over the month and ones that came pretty close. Honestly, I haven’t even looked at playbill or AA in 2 weeks. My focus totally shifts during this time so I’m not surprised but it’s weird how for a month a year, I simply forget I am an actor. I’m sure this will pick up for me in Nov/Dec and for the beginning of the year.
SHOWS I SAW
Last Friday I saw a bunch of friends in Jesus Christ Superstar down at the Cranford Dramatic Club. I LOVE JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. Honestly, it’s a guilty pleasure show that I am absolutely NOT guilty about loving at all. This is definitely a show that if you are in it, you love it for life and know every single word. I swear I could’ve been up there in any role at all. Unfortunately, not a lot of solo songs or pieces good for auditions. One could argue that I Don’t Know How To Love Him is a decent audition song, but I think it has a bad ending for an audition song - as you know by now I prefer audition songs that have big, long, sustained “WOW” endings. However, I think for very specific auditions it could work. I’ll be seeing The Music Man tonight - another show I love and have been in. Seeing it with a few other Music Man fans so we’ll have a good time. Plenty of audition options there!
SHOW OF THE MONTH
I am loving getting to know The Great Comet and I hope you are joining me. That opening is SO GOOD. I haven’t quite figured out the plot yet (i know nothing about War & Peace so if it is like standard knowledge i apologize). I looked on Concord to see if there was a production to attend nearby and it appears the rights are only available to colleges and the one in NJ that’s producing it is a tad far just to see it. I think this may be a show I’d like to be in - maybe Marya? Maybe I’m wrong haha let me know!
