#84: Okay, now you know! Now forget it.

Disconnecting from the outcome.
That sentence has been plaguing my mind for months and especially the last few months for myself and my college prep students. It’s something i am so good at, but so hard for my students to get. I’ve also struggled with this a bit with my last few auditions.
Disconnecting from the outcome to me means - i will apply, audition, show up, rehearse, train, etc, all for their own purpose and not because it means i will get job/get into the school.
Apply: meaning apply to college. They need to apply for a “shot”, not as a safety.
Audition: TRY! I’m auditioning to make connections. To simply have a great audition. To make an impression for the future. To try new material. To put myself out there. To practice auditioning. TO GET TO PERFORM FOR 2 MINUTES. I’m not auditioning to get the job.
Rehearse/Train: i’m training and practicing because it makes my skill level stronger. I need better skills so that my art is stronger, and then i’ll give stronger auditions and performances.
I’m not (they aren’t) doing any of this to get the job. Getting the job is so far out of my control, and I’m good about that disconnect usually. But man I feel for my students when they don’t pass a prescreen or they are working through those first months professionally auditioning. Those first few “did not pass” emails or not getting a callback really rocks you. It takes time for both of those scenarios to not bother you too much. It’s cool to care - it means that it’s important to you. However, sometimes you just have to get through it and move on.
Disconnecting from the outcome means that it’s over after your part is complete.
