#120: Weekly Audition & Coaching Recap

Friday 12/13/24

Welcome to Friday! We will be reviewing auditions, coachings, shows I saw and ROLE PREP!

AUDITIONS

Another week no auditions! I had one planned for Monday but ended up not going. It was for a new play and I think I would’ve done well but ultimately decided against it. And, to be truthful… there was no other reason I didn’t go other than I didn’t feel like it. Years ago I would’ve said “WHAT IF THAT WAS THE ONE JULIE” but when Neil Patrick Harris is in an off-broadway show in the year 2024, it probably wasn’t lol.

COACHINGS

This week was quite busy as we are gearing up for regular audition season plus LIVE audition season for my college prep students. Lots of people in all their theatrical journeys are going to be spending Jan/Feb/March putting themselves out there hoping to get a job or an acceptance. It truly never ends! Here is one big thing I talked about a few times this week: don’t overthink it. This is good acting advice of course, but i meant it moreso like don’t overthink the song choice. A pop song can just be a pop song you like. It doesn’t have to sound like it’s from Legally Blonde or Dear Evan Hansen or Girl From North Country. It can just be something you like that you sing well. Connect and select!

SHOWS I SAW

I got invited to see Tuck Everlasting at Vanguard Theater Company in Montclair NJ! They even invited me with a plus 1 so I brought my mother and we each got a little merch bag which was so nice. I like the show - saw some friends in it in 2022 I think. Vanguard did an excellent job - great cast and design elements. I’m always happy to support a theatre that is putting in the work! They have an amazing mission and educational component as well. Check them out!

ROLE PREP

So, this prep is all about Heidi Hansen and here is what I did this week! I read the libretto and did some script scoring. I wrote out some notes about what people say about her, what she says about herself. I also started to work through her solo sections in Anybody Have A Map?, Good For You, and, of course, So Big/So Small. I know So Big the best and know the other 2 enough but only for like a day 1 rehearsal haha. I’m going to spend this week working through those two and then moving into her harmonies and specific vocals throughout the show! So far so good. Excited to share my findings. This week, i’d like to get those 3 songs on tape :) we’ll see…. But definitely before the end of the year.
